Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler and illustrations by Maira Kalman
Min and Ed have broken up.  Min is taking Ed a box of stuff that she acquired during their relationship.  She doesn't want it anymore.  With each item, she explains a little bit more about why they broke up.  This book is totally different from what we've gotten from Daniel Handler (Lemony Snicket) in the past.  Plus, the pages are shiny.

Anya's Ghost by Vera Brosgol
Anya is a Russian immigrant and the last thing she wants is to be a Russian immigrant.  She feels alone and in desperate need of a friend.  When she accidentally falls into a well, the last thing she expects to find is a friend.  But she does.  A ghost is ok for a friend, right?  It can't make her any weirder than kids already think she is, right?  With her new friend at her side, Anya starts doing better on tests, starts talking to the boy she thinks is cute, and it seems like her life is finally shaping up the way she wants.  But when her friend starts to turn on her, Anya has to decide if her ghost friend is really all she's cracked up to be.
